Life on the Other Side

January 5th, 2012

Atelier, a division of Leo Burnett Advertising dedicated to fashion, beauty and luxury brands, are the team responsible for international names such as Max Factor, Aussie Hair, Dunhill Fragrances, Herbal Essence etc. Their job is to be fussy and their place is most definitely on the same side of the camera as mine. So, it was with a little trepidation that I took on the assignment of shooting their own promotional pictures!

As you can see, they’re a good looking bunch….and good fun….thankfully!

Shooting all-media Photography combined with filming a TV commercial

November 9th, 2011

Q. Why would anyone want to do this?
i) A campaign’s creative elements, such as Talent and set/ location may be shared across media. ii) To take advantage of Talent availability iii) Advertisers are looking to make savings, create more ‘content’ with less money or simply be more efficient with their budget, a combined Tv and photography shoot can do this.

I’ve just got back from a trip to New York. Here’s a few snaps I took along the way.

This weekend was the Marbella International Film Festival and I was there representing my short film Éric. It was a fantastic weekend for me as not only did I get to spend time and party with filmmakers from around the globe but  I also came away with an award for Best Short Film.

Here I am suited and booted on the red carpet.

AOP Awards 2011 – Best in category

September 29th, 2011

Last night in London it was the prestigious Association of Photographers Awards, held at Ambika P3 on Marylebone Road. Photographers, agents and industry folk gathered for an early glass of fizz to hear who had taken the top awards in the 18 categories. I was there because my short film Éric was up for an award and came away with the Best in Category for Non-Commissioned Moving Image. A party followed…………uh!

Of course you can’t make a film on your own, so this is a good opportunity for me to thank everyone who worked on Éric with me, especially Mark Allin and David Kerr who were key in shaping our little film into an award winner. Thanks also to my agency team at the Peter Bailey Company, who all turned out to support me.

Portfolio fun

September 26th, 2011

The fact is that I’ve won an award at this year’s Association of Photographer’s Awards, I don’t know what yet but it’s for my film Éric. All the winners get to exhibit our portfolios the day after at an event called Exposure in an area where they will be available to commissioners of photography. I thought it would be a good idea to exhibit both my Beauty portfolio and my Beast portfolio…..the AOP said, ‘only one book please!’. So here’s Peter and I trying to make one portfolio out of two. Funnily enough, I think it works well…thanks AOP!

Red Earth

September 26th, 2011

Another friend of mine is the Director of an international environmental arts group called Red Earth. They do some very interesting work identifying connections between art, science and nature through performance. At the weekend they had a huge installation and performance journey through the incredible landscape of Harting Down in West Sussex and they asked me if I would come along and capture the action, which I was very happy to do. As you can see, it’s dramatic stuff and visually quite cinematic. The audience of around 350 over the two days were knocked out.

Slash

September 15th, 2011

I was/ am a big fan of Guns and Roses, so when a friend of mine called to say he was opening a new London music store, Slash was flying over especially to open it and would I come and take some pictures, I was happy to oblige.

Slash is probably the greatest living rock guitarist. I say ‘probably’ and ‘living’ to pay homage to Jimmy Page and Jimi Hendrix respectively. If you’re unfamiliar with the great man’s work, check out the guitar solo on ‘Sweet Child O’ Mine (he was only 22 at the time!)

New Beast Dave

September 13th, 2011

This is Dave, my latest Beast. A spray painter by trade, Dave has recently turned his back on 20 years of smoking skunk (cannabis), which was seriously effecting his health and his work. Fully aware of his addictive personality, he is now using it to his advantage in the gym. You can’t see it in this picture but Dave is now built like a tank.

Cuba chairs

July 30th, 2011

I shot this picture in Trinidad, Cuba and I nearly walked past it for a second time before I spotted it. I like it a lot, so I had it printed and framed and have it hanging in our front room in Brighton. It’s amusing to me the comments I get about it and so I’m used to and very happy for you to read into it some great underlying metaphor about the balance of power or the relevance of the cold tiled floor but actually, you’d be overestimating me….I just spotted a nice shot.

Libby nudes

July 29th, 2011

Perhaps a blog is a place I can show the pictures that I shoot which don’t really fit my portfolio or my website. Libby is a professional life model and spent a day with myself and Julia Francis (make-up) in my studio. The pose on the right was Libby’s natural reaction to her finding out that I was also a Piscean.
